Blog on Privacy

Privacy and confidentiality has become an increasingly widespread concern among the rise of new media. Examples include the selling of search histories when online shopping, as well as more intense issues like the Equifax breach. Millions of people around the world today are involved with some form of privacy breach, especially on social media. So with the implementation of new technology, regulation for these issues become less overt.

These problems have become much more widespread easily because of the digitalization of everything. Because with anything online, it can somehow be tracked. Your credit information, Amazon order history, Google search history, Facebook story reads - these are all tracked somewhere, somehow. And since our generation is less hesitant putting our information out there, there are consequences that come with the public use. It's no surprise that hackers have been a threat, so much so that companies are now upping their cybersecurity to save their consumers's information. But even then, the thread of cyber bullying that comes with social media is another prevalent issue because online channels are much easier to free-roam than in person. It's the idea that you can become whomever you want, however you want on the Internet, and this leads to many problems with the bullying issue mentioned. So there are mental and financial instances that come with the Internet. Essentially, it's advancements have created much more free space, and the utilities for it are endless. And without the necessary precautions instilled, this space becomes even more difficult to control. That makes new media so difficult to combat regarding privacy and confidentiality - it's all the information pouring in from millions of users everyday that make it difficult to condense and secure.

  1. Hello Anh,

Yes I definitely agree that our generation is less hesitant and actually more open to putting our personal information on the internet. Many people post their personal pictures on Facebook and Instagram, which may reveal to hackers who they are friends with, their family members, and other important information. This privacy issue is most certainly a deep concern and we need to be more wise as what to put up on the internet for our safety.

  2. Hi Anh,
I also agree that our generation is less hesitant in putting our personal information online. Especially because there is an app on our phone for basically everything. I know that my parents always told me to be very careful with what information I put online but it has become such a common thing. They never would download their bank applications on their phones or anything like that. Now, we can even pay with our phones. Another thing I agree with is how difficult privacy is to control especially since our search history's are sold. A really common complaint people have is that they could search something in one place and somehow it keeps popping up on any other site they're on.
